Plan: Generics to increase from 60% to 80% by 2017

The Government of Japan plans to develop a plan by this summer that outlines the country’s road to fiscal rehabilitation. On April 27, 2015 a meeting was held to discuss ways to reign in social welfare expenditures. The Ministry of finance said that the social welfare will needs to limit its annual increase to around 500 billion yen per year. Specifically it aims to raise the percentage of less expensive generic drugs. The current goal stated by Health Ministry (MHLW) is to raise to 60% the ratio of generic drugs by the end of fiscal year 2017. Raising that percentage to 80% will save about 200 billion yen. Other ideas subject of discussion are to increase the co-payment ratio of medical fees for elderly people 75 years and above.
